Message from the Captain - March 2024

I have had a quick start to my year as Captain after taking the reins at the AGM on 14th March 2024. The meeting was a short affair with most subject areas already covered in the recent EGM and Finance meetings.

Unfortunately, we continue to be plagued by the poor weather. However, I still went ahead with my Captain’s Drive-In on Sunday 17th, managing a commendable 178 yards with the old hickory shafted driver, in conditions which might have been described in racing parlance as heavy going. The three winners who guessed the correct yardage were Geoff Heath, Dennis Hulland and Dick Abbotts. Thanks to everyone who attended.

Following the lead from Nigel and Jill last year, Lady Captain Jean and I have decided to combine all donations to our two charities and splitting them equally at the end of the year.  The drive-in raised £163.50 towards the Lincs, Notts Air Ambulance and Maggie’s Cancer Support.

In preparation for the move towards the new governance structure, we have already had the first meeting of The Acting Board of Directors. This meeting outlined the roles and responsibilities of the two committees in relation to the six strategic priority areas.  The treasurer Grahame Wilson is still pressing ahead with the work necessary to incorporate the club as a limited company. Alongside Dianne, work also continues with drafting the Articles of Association for the new limited company, to replace the existing club constitution.

We are now asking for members to come forward who are interested in becoming directors of the new limited company. Grahame or Nigel will be happy to talk to anyone who would like to know what the roles will entail, so the club can continue thrive and grow.

The first meeting of the new Captain’s Committee will take place this evening. This committee will be more golf oriented than the Board of Directors and will cover competitions, matches, new member introduction and integration with an oversight on visitor experience. All the various groups in the club will have representation at this meeting.

We have had an influx of new members recently, and I welcome all of you to Chilwell and hope you all really enjoy your golf here. However, I am struggling to keep pace with all the new names. With this in mind, could I ask all our members to add a photo of yourselves into the ClubV1 app. Press menu, then profile, upload an image and submit the update at the bottom of the page. The team in the office will then confirm the update. You can also update your privacy settings in the app. It is extremely useful for fellow members who wish to contact you if you have the email and mobile phone boxes ticked in this section.

The club plays friendly matches against other local clubs throughout the year. You can find details of these matches in the ‘Club Teams’ section of ClubV1. You can apply to join the squad for these matches in the app or add your name to the list in the corridor at the golf club. Alternatively, you can speak to our Vice-Captain Denis Reynolds, and he will add your name to the group.

We are blessed with fantastic greens at Chilwell which are held in high regard throughout the county. As the course fully opens, could I ask everyone to repair all pitch marks to keep them in the best condition possible. Could I also ask you all to take out divot bags wherever possible to repair any divots around the course. We have a course of which we can all be proud. Please help our Head-Greenkeeper Dan Wheatley and his team to help keep it that way.

Enjoy your golf.

Mike Gannon
Club Captain 2024

Welcome from this Year's Captains

Your Captain for 2024 is Mike Gannon and the Lady Captain is Jean Higman.

This year will see some major changes in the structure of the club.

The club will be incorporated as a Limited Company, and the committee structure will see some dramatic changes.  The existing single committee will be replaced with two separate bodies. The Board of Directors will be smaller than the current committee and will be responsible for the long-term strategic management of the club.  This will run in tandem with the Captain’s Committee which will have a greater emphasis on the golf and social side of the club.   This was voted by you, the members at the recent EGM.

Please support if you are able, our two charities for the year. Jean’s charity is Maggie’s Cancer Support, with Mike supporting the Lincs, Notts Air Ambulance charity.  These are both very worthy causes.

Despite the horrific weather we have experienced at the start of the year, we are sure 2024 will be a fantastic year for golf at Chilwell.  Dan and the rest of the greenkeeping team will have the greens and the rest of the course in fantastic condition as always.

We look forward to seeing you all at the club over the coming year and we both hope you have a fantastic golfing season.

Mike and Jean

Captain and Lady Captain 2024

PS   Please join Mike at his Captain's Drive on Sunday 17th March at 12 noon.
