COURSE ARCHITECT'S REPORT
Course Architect, Johnathan Tucker, was commissioned to undertake a comprehensive course review.
The on course visit was over a two day period during October. The report was received and reviewed by the Greens' sub committee, and was then presented to the Main committe at the Management Meeting on the 14th November. The work in involved in implemeting the recommendations is extensive and costly, and will take several years to complete. The Committee agreed that we accept and implement the proposals in the report.

Visit by Henry Bechelet. STRI Agronomist
VISIT BY
HENRY BECHELET
STRI AGRONOMIST
WEDNESDAY 12th OCTOBER 2011
Henry’s presentation commenced at 7pm to an audience of approximately 80 people. He explained that the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) is an independent body which is totally self- funding and specialises in all types of sports turf surfaces - 70% of which are golf related. They are advisors to the R&A and also annually advise on the Open venue.
Henry himself has had 20 years experience and has for four years specifically advised Chilwell Manor.
He initially spoke of the Greens and how, by taking a series of measurements annually (speed, surface hardness, smoothness of roll), it is possible to show the effectiveness of the maintenance work in reducing the thatch content.
The fairways were obviously suffering from the extreme drought conditions. Henry explained about the different grasses and their characteristics - especially the annual meadow grass on a clay based soil that we have at Chilwell which is not drought tolerant, resulting in the large bare areas evident on the course at the moment. Mowing was necessary throughout the year to keep the more hardy grasses under control - the cutting height of 15mm was fine but could be raised to 17mm but Henry felt this was not necessary. The view of members that mowing was scalping the fairways was a misconception ; the reason high points were bare was the fact that the grass had died or was dormant. Unless there is a significant improvement in the course, the use of fairway mats would be beneficial during the winter. In order to help recovery, many areas will need re-seeding and/or re-turfing. Trolleys will need to be kept off the fairways and well away from green surrounds. Good growing conditions now and in the spring will, of course, greatly assist the situation.
The Captain then explained that a Green’s sub-committee had been formed to review all aspects of the course - including the difficulties we are having with the 7th hole. It had been decided to employ a course architect to assist with the review, and also to investigate the need for planning permission if a net was eventually needed along the 7th.
Paul, the Club Professional, has agreed to join the Green’s Committee.
Henry Bechelet has agreed to hold a similar evening in 2012 on the day he undertakes his annual visit.

Ron Walton Seniors Open Thursday 25th August 2011
The winners of the Trophy were Chris Mansfield and Ian Craig, congratulations to them. Presenting the Trophy was Ron's wife Phylis.
At the prizegiving a cheque was presented to the representative of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance by our Ted Kitley.
Ten years ago Ted was very grateful for being airlifted from the course and we are very happy he is still here to-day.
The sum raised amounted to £2300 this includes a donation from one of our members, the majority coming from the Gilbert Greenall Charity Open, held in July.
STRI visit by Henry Beschelet
The full report is now available, and there are copies in the Main Lounge, Small Lounge, Spike Bar, Professional's Shop and in the members area of the web-site.
The report covers some areas of members concerns,ie; tinning of greens, cutting of fairways, fungal rings on the greens.

Notice to All Members
Due to the considerable quantity of golf balls being hit out of bounds and causing damage to the adjacent properties, the 7th Tee will be moved again to an area in front of the dyke.
It is with regret that we note the miss-hit golf balls have not been reported to either the Professional or the Honorary Secretary.
