Course Gallery

  • 1st : Portland -- The 1st fairway from the tee. This hole is a 323 yards, par 4. Ladies - 309 yards, par 4. It's a slight dogleg left, the only hazard being a brook which runs along the right side and gathers a sliced drive.

  • 2nd : Butt Moot -- The 2nd 343 yards, par 4, Ladies - 321 yards par 4. Seen here from the back tee, there's a brook just in front leading to the fairway. A group of trees on the right hides the green from view.

  • 3rd : Manor -- The 3rd green viewed from one of the two ponds. This hole is a 421 yards, par 4. Ladies - 361 yards, par 4. A good drive will bring the green in sight, otherwise it's a dogleg right. Hazards include a hidden stream running across the fairway and the pond at the left of the green which slopes towards the water.

  • 4th : The Elm -- The 4th from the forward tee. This is a 223 yards par 3 hole. Ladies - 144 yards, par 3. It's a straightforward hole from here, but takes on a different aspect from the competition tee which requires a clean straight drive through a tree-bounded gap .

  • 5th : Willows -- The 5th from the tee. This is a 400 yards par 4 hole. Ladies - 311 yards, par 4. The main hazards are clearly visible including the small tree which shades the Ladies tee, the lone tree straight ahead and the brook beneath it. The green is off to the right at the end of an undulating fairway.

  • 6th : Mauvale -- The 6th from near the green. This is a 497 yards par 5 hole. Ladies - 415 yards, par 5. The tees are offset to the left of the general run of the fairway. A straight drive will find a handily placed copse so it's necessary to aim out to the right, but not too much or more problems will be found. Fortunately after that, it's a straightforward hole.

    6th : Mauvale

  • 7th : Lady Bridge -- The 7th from the back of the green with the tees just visible in the distance. This is a 432 yards par 4 hole, stroke index 1. Ladies - 409 yards, par 5. A long hole often played into the prevailing wind. The stand of trees seen here interfere with an otherwise good drive if placed too far right. Oh, there's O.O.B. nearly all the way up the left as well as many bushes to loose a ball in.

    7th : Lady Bridge

  • 8th : Havers -- The 8th looking over the footbridge towards the green. This is a 421 yards par 4 hole. Ladies - 420 yards, par 5. This hole tends to play long. There is a brook before the green which poses a question for the second shot - do I go for the green but end up in the water or play up short, chip to the green - and still end up in the water ! Fine golfers have no problems here, but other perish. Across the road now to the other half of the course to the 9th.

    8th : Havers

  • 9th : Orchard -- The 9th from the tee. This is a 178 yards par 3 hole. Ladies - 131 yards, par3. The public road is just over the hedge on the left - so no wayward drives ! The green is well protected by bunkers and also slopes from front to back, side to side - making in all a fine par 3 hole.

  • 10th : Chilwell -- The 10th green with the refreshment cabin and club-house behind. This hole is a 338 yards par 4 and curves gently left. Ladies - 324 yards, par 4. The new green slopes in all directions making for some 'interesting' borrows. Players can return to the club-house from here if going no further.

  • 11th : Hallcroft -- The 11th from the fairway. This is a 354 yards par 4 hole. Ladies - 299 yards, par 4. There's handily placed bunkers to catch a poor drive and, visible here, a mound across the fairway obscuring the view of the green. The trees on the left here catch anything hit to the left from the tee (just as well, the road is next.)

    11th : Hallcroft

  • 12th : Corner Pin -- The 12th from the tee. This is a 135 yards par 3 hole. Ladies - 121 yards, par 3. It ought to be straightforward but the green sits up on a mound protected by a host of vicious bunkers and tricky borrows await on the green.

  • 13th : Clifton -- The 13th. 300 yards par 4. Ladies - 293 yards, par 4. This hole is at the Eastern edge of the course, so it's out-of-bounds on the left. The good - hitters will easily miss the fairway bunker and finish here. The approach to the sloping green is offset right so that is the preferred position to aim for.

  • 14th : Meadows -- The 14th green from the fairway. This is a 435 yards par 4 hole. Ladies - 392 yards, par 5. Another long hole (S.I.2) curving gently right. This features a long narrow green sloping from front to back.

  • 15th : Westward -- The 15th from the tee. This is a 166 yards par 3 hole. Ladies - 152 yards, par 3. Plenty of bunkers and another green which slopes up from front to back.

  • 16th : Long Tom -- The 16th 476 yards par 5, Ladies - 379 yards, par 4. It features a long, straight fairway with a footpath crossing about halfway down. Here, two trees act as sentinels, with a large fairway bunker on the right just before the green.

  • 17th : Humpty -- The 17th seen from the back of the green. This is a 369 yards par 4 hole. Ladies - 269 yards, par 4. The drive is challenged by O.O.B. on the left and trees around the 16th on the right, however there is a generous landing area. The fairway curves to the left and good ball placement will help with the next shot to the green as it is well protected by bunkers. Some tricky borrows await.

    17th : Humpty

  • 18th : Home -- The 18th from the fairway. This is a 437 yards par 4 hole. Ladies - 419 yards, par 5. A wide straight fairway with a bunker to catch a poor drive awaits. However the clubhouse beckons once the well-guarded green with its slope has been conquered.
